Delta Government urges Udu Chiefs to support peace, unity agenda

The Delta State Government has appealed to the Udu Council of Chiefs and Kingmakers to align with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s peace and development vision under the MORE Agenda, emphasizing the need for unity and cooperation in resolving internal disputes.

The call was made by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Peace Building and Conflict Resolution, Chief Edwin Uzor, during an expanded peace meeting with the Udu Council of Chiefs held at Unity Hall, Governor’s Office Annex, Warri.

Chief Uzor reaffirmed Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to peace and stability, which he described as critical pillars of the administration’s MORE (Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security) Agenda.

He disclosed that the state government had received two formal petitions linked to ongoing tensions in Udu Local Government Area.

The first petition, according to him, was submitted by the Udu Kingmakers, was titled “Threat to Peace in Udu LGA by Factional Members of Udu Council of Chiefs”.

The second, he said, came from the Udu Council of Chiefs Forum, Otor-Udu, was titled “Udu Kingdom at a Crossroads” both arising from disputes following the passing of the Ovie (king) of Udu Kingdom.

“The Governor has zero tolerance for crises,” Chief Uzor declared. “While we acknowledge that challenges do exist, what matters most is how we respond. The government’s priority is swift, proactive action to prevent any escalation. Today, Delta State is about 75% peaceful, and we are working diligently to push that figure even higher.”

He assured traditional rulers and stakeholders that the state government would objectively evaluate the issues raised in the petitions and take decisive steps to implement a fair, lasting resolution.

Chief Uzor also reminded the traditional leaders of their critical role in conflict resolution, urging them to work collaboratively to preserve peace and social harmony.

“As custodians of our culture and values, you have a moral responsibility to promote unity, guide your people with wisdom, and avoid actions that may fuel discord,” he said.

Chief Uzor concluded by reiterating the state government’s dedication to maintaining peace and fostering unity across all communities in Delta State.

In response, one of the senior chiefs in the Udu Kingdom expressed gratitude to the state government for its timely intervention and appealed for a prompt, peaceful settlement of the crisis.
