
Delta State Government (DTSG) has rewarded deserving pupils and students in the state public and private primary and secondary schools with prizes and awards for their outstanding performances in science competition and exhibition.
The awardees participated in the 2024 primary five mathematics and science competitions and exhibition in the state, held at the Professor Chike Edozien Secretariat, Asaba.
In a keynote address, State Commissioner for Primary Education, Dr. Ashibogwu described Mathematics as a potent instrument and a bedrock of many professions that drive innovations, development and solve problems.
Represented by Comrade Ernest Ossai, Ashibogwu described the performance of the pupils in the primary category of the competition as a demonstration of curiosity, diligence, critical thinking and quantitative reasoning skills.
While congratulating the winners, the commissioner extended his appreciation to teachers and parents for nurturing the young talents towards the development and improvement of the learning of science subjects in schools.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu stated that the science xompetition and exhibitions had showcased incredible talents of the students, adding that the performances of the students were worthy of commendation.
She noted the awardees earned their various positions through hard work, dedication and good conduct.
Mrs. Ezewu, who was represented by Mr. Ejiro Mayor, explained that the competitions had exposed young talents and increased the love of science among secondary school students.
Ezewu congratulated the winner and thanked the state government, teachers and parents for their efforts towards the success of the competitions.
Earlier, the Director of Science Education, Mrs. Hope Igumbor in a welcome address, said the occasion was the presentation of prizes and awards in honour of pupils and students who performed exceptionally in the various stages of the 2024 Primary Five Mathematics, Science Competitions and Exhibitions.
She used the medium to appreciate the state governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, commissioners for Primary Education, and Secondary Education as well as parents and teachers.
The awards were categorized into four sections for pupils in primary and students in secondary categories.
The first category was primary five mathematics competition with Oghenerukevwe Kaghare of St Michael, Udu; Joy Mudiaga of Treasure Crest International School, Uvwie and Pio Tubotu of St Michael, Udu winning the first, second and third positions respectively.
The second category was science competition and exhibition for primary school pupils with Mitchell Obianife of Women Affairs Primary School, Asaba; Chimkamsi Onwugbenu of Greniel Academy, Asaba and Esther Nzekwe of Okwe Primary School, Okwe were awarded first, second and third positions respectively.
The third category was Science Competition and Exhibition for Junior Secondary Schools across the state, won by Chibuike Obi of Notre-Dame College, Ozoro; Favour Akintola of First Baptist, Warri and Jonathan Akparobi of St Joseph Technical College, Ozoro in first, second and third positions respectively.
The last category of awards on Science Competition and Exhibition for Senior Secondary Schools went to Akporoghene Oyibo of Notre Dame College, Ozoro (first), Princess Gift of Government Model Secondary School, Asaba (second) and Favour Oseahaegbhe of Niger Mixed Secondary School, Asaba (third).
The occasion was attended by the Principal of Government Model Secondary School, Asaba, Dr. (Mrs.) Obiajulu Eboka, who represented the State President of All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Mr. Christian Orakpo Ahweyevu, the State Chairman of National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Mrs. Precious Young, State Chairman of the Association of Private Schools Owners (APSON), Comrade Keno Emiaso and representative of the Chief Inspector of Education (CIE) for Oshimili South Local Government Area and staff in the two ministries.
Highlights of the ceremony were the presentation of plaques, certificate of participation and cash gifts to awardees and exhibition of products made by the pupils and students.
