Warri South chairman bans rallies, protests indefinitely, cites security concerns

The Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Comrade Weyinmi  Agbateyiniro, in a bold move aimed at preserving peace and security in the council area, announced an indefinite ban on all forms of rallies and protests within the local government area.

The pronouncement was made on Monday, May 19, 2025, shortly after a crucial security meeting held at the Warri South Council Main Secretariat in Warri. Speaking to newsmen immediately after the meeting, Comrade Agbateyiniro said the decision became necessary in the light of growing concerns about the potential for public gatherings to escalate into violence or threaten public order.

“As from today, all forms of protests and rallies are hereby banned indefinitely across Warri South Local Government Area,” the Chairman stated firmly. “This is a proactive measure to safeguard lives, properties, and ensure continued peace in our communities.”

He added that while the administration respects the rights of citizens to peaceful assembly, the current security realities demand stricter regulation of public gatherings. He stressed that any individual or group wishing to organize a rally or protest must first seek and obtain approval from the appropriate authorities.

“The right to protest is not abolished, but it must now be exercised responsibly and within the bounds of the law. Anyone or group planning such activities must get the necessary permission from the local government before proceeding,” he said.

As the Chief Security Officer of the local government, Comrade Agbateyiniro reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining law and order while creating a safe and enabling environment for legitimate businesses and daily life to thrive.

He assured law-abiding residents of the administration’s continuous efforts to enhance security architecture across Warri South, urging the public to remain calm and supportive of the decision.

“Our focus remains on peace, stability, and economic growth. We are working closely with security agencies to ensure Warri South remains safe and open for development,” he said.

Comrade Agbateyiniro also called on youth groups, civil society organizations, and community leaders to support the ban and help sensitize the public on the importance of maintaining peace.

The ban is expected to remain in effect until further notice, with authorities warning that violators will face the full weight of the law.
